Knife Care

Knife care guidelines listed here are true for most knives, not just

Karam Handmade Knives. Good knife care will help you enjoy your

knife and keep it performing to potential for years to come.

Tip #1: Do not store your knife in its sheath for long periods.
Why? All leather contains acids and will eventually stain your blade. Tool steels are more susceptible to this than stainless blades. When putting your knife away for the season, follow tips 2 and 3 below.

Tip #2: Wipe your knife with a silicone cloth after cleaning it or before storage.
Why? Silicone actually sits underneath water (moisture), while oil will sit on top. Oil is okay to use as long as the knife is COMPLETELY dry before wiping with oil.

Tip #3: Store your knife in a cool, dry place.
Why? This will keep moisture away from your blade.

Tip #4: Re-sharpen your knife before it becomes too dull. The best practice is to lightly strop or touch-up your knife right after field use.
Why? This makes the edge easier to maintain and the knife safer to use.

Tip #5: Rub a light coating of mineral oil onto ivory, wood and antler knife handles before storing.
Why? These are all natural materials and can shrink over time if stored for long periods without proper care. Mineral oil is not necessary for stabilized wood or man-made material.

Tip #6: Never throw your Karam Handmade Knife or use it for heavy chopping.
Why? Not only is it dangerous; it is not good for the blade either. There are nice camp axes on the market that are good for chopping. Unless otherwise requested, my knives are tempered for cutting and slicing chores.

Tip #7: Use common sense when using any knife. Don’t take on a major project when you are tired, or walk around with your knife out of its sheath.
Why? Owning a custom knife is a personal privilege. Using your knife safely in a manner for which it is intended will allow you to enjoy it for years to come.
